Farmers in Rubanda and Kabale decry increase of fake agro-inputs on the market

Farmers in Rubanda and Kabale district have decried the increase in fake agro-inputs on the market. The farmers say that they have fallen victims of unscrupulous traders who deal in counterfeit farm-inputs including seeds, fertilizers, vet-drugs and agro-chemicals.

Charles Bitwire, a farmer in Ikumba Sub County Rubanda district says that last year, he decide to undertake Maize growing, but ended up with very poor yields, because of the poor seeds he bought from agro-input dealers.

Robert Byamukama, a potato farmer from Kamuganguzi Sub County in Kabale district, he has sprayed three times with fungicide to curb late bright but in vain.

The Rubanda district chairman, Jogo Kenneth Biryabarema, says that farmers have fallen victims to counterfeit agro-input dealers, because majority of them cannot differentiate between the genuine and counterfeit agro-inputs.

The state Minister of Agriculture, Animal husbandry and fisheries, Christopher Kibanzanga admits the agricultural sector is at risk of collapsing due to fake inputs. He however says that President Yoweri Museveni has directed his ministry to find genuine companies producing agro-inputs and to have agents in the country.
