Fall Armyworm disease has attacked and devastated several gardens of maize and sorghum in Bufundi Sub County, Rubanda District an, leaving farmers in fear of famine and financial hurdles in the area.
The affected farmers who include Jackson Katungwensi and Mercy Twinobusingye, residents of Mugyera parish say that though some of them tried to spray using pesticides, the worm has remained resistant.
They are calling for quick intervention from Government in providing strong and effective pesticides.
The Rubanda District Agricultural Officer, Daniel Nabaasa, says that the district production department recently sensitized farmers on the disease control adding that the district has secured chemicals like Rocket to the worms.
Fall Armyworm has already caused damage to staple crops in different areas of Rukiga, Kabale and other Districts across Kigezi region. It was confirmed in Luwero District in March last year before extending to Mbale in April. The worm has destroyed crops in countries like Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Ghana among others.
