Families left stranded after heavy rain destroys houses in Rubanda

A family of seven people has been left stranded without shelter after heavy rainfall on Thursday 11 destroyed eight houses in Kagogo Village Rwayu Parish in Nyamweru Sub County Rubanda District.

Heavy rains last September killed over 20 people in Rubanda District.

Hillary Tumukunde, his wife and five children have been prompted to seek shelter at the Kagogo Village Chairperson Benefansi Kigarasi’s home because their house was completely destroyed, according to Benson Twesigomwe, a resident there.

Twesigomwe says that residents managed to drain flood water from six other partially destroyed houses, where the owners shall temporarily put up as they wait for further intervention. Another house belonging to a community group was also completely destroyed.

The rainfall that started at around 3pm and ended at around 6pm also destroyed gardens of beans, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes and maize among others that were due for harvest. Some roads were also destroyed by floods, according to Twesigomwe.

He calls upon government to deliver urgent relief before the situation gets out of hand.
