Government plans to retrieve MV Kabalega after 13 yrs

Government has started drawing plans to retrieve MV Kabalega from Lake Victoria. MV Kabalega sank following a head-on collision with MV Kaawa on 8th May 2005, about 8 nautical miles South West of Kisaba Landing site on Bukasa Island.

MV Kaawa was rescued by Uganda Peoples Defense Forces-UPDF marines. The vessel was damaged below the waterline and sank about 150 feet between Kuye Islands in Mazinga Sub County and Bukasa in Kyamuswa Sub County in Kalangala District.

The Manager in Charge of Port and Marine Services in Uganda Railways Corporation, Charles Ruzigye, said Monday 6th August that plans to retrieve MV Kabalega are in the advanced stages. Once retrieved, government plans to rehabilitate the vessel and use it for trade across borders on Lake Victoria.

The Works State Minister, General Katumba Wamala confirmed that government is engaged in high level planning meetings to retrieve the vessel. He however, declined to divulge more details on how the vessel would be retrieved and how much it would cost government.
