A businessman and his wife were on Tuesday night 14th August rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition after they were shot by yet to be identified gunmen in Kabale Municipality.
Francis Aryarugamu, 52 and his wife Zamu Kenkoonzi were shot while at Bataka Cell, Mwanjari Ward Southern Division, Kabale Municipality at around 08:40PM. An eye witness told our reporter on condition of anonymity that gunmen attacked the victims as they footed home in Mwanjari Trading Center in Southern Division, after closing their Soda Depot Shop in Kabale Central Market.
He said that thugs who were travelling on a motorcycle with unclear number plate also grabbed a black polythene bag that contained a water melon fruit from Kenkoonzi and took off.
The Police Spokesperson for Kigezi Region, Elly Maate confirms the incident saying that the victims were referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital from Kabale Regional Referral Hospital at around midnight. Maate says that the gunmen were armed with a Sub Machine Gun (SMG) rifle which they used to shoot at the victims.
Maate also says that Aryarugamu was shot from the stomach and the bullet penetrated through the back while Kenkoonzi was shot from the back and the bullet penetrated through the right breast. He adds that police has already picked the cartridges from the scene of crime to help in investigations.
Our reporter who was at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital observed that plans to immediately refer the victims using a police ambulance were reached after none of the doctors responsible to carry out operations in the theatre showed up and their phones were switched off.
Health workers who were on night duty only transfused blood into the victims before they were rushed to Mbarara.
