One arrested for allegedly defrauding pension worth 14 million shillings

Police in Kabale district has arrested, Edison Kakuru Turyamureeba, for allegedly defrauding the pension worth 14million shillings for a deceased police officer.

Kakuru a resident of Kanyamatembe cell in Kabere in Muko Sub County in Rubanda District is accused of defrauding the money from the late Benon Mayanja’s bank account. Mayanja, who was a police officer in the Uganda Police Force died in 2012 and before his death, he ordered Kakuru to take charge of withdrawing the pension and give it to his family for survival.

Kakuru, who was then a health worker in Isingiro District, was dragged to Kabale police station by Kate Asiimwe and Robert Ndihomujuni, both children on the deceased, accusing him of withdrawing the pension money in July 2013 and disappearing it.

On 31st January 2014, Kakuru escaped from his wedding service St. Mark Kikungiri church of Uganda parish in Kabale municipality, where he was supposed to tie the knot with one Susan Nabaasa, after he realized that police was at the scene waiting to arrest him.

The Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Maate, confirms Kakuru’s arrest, saying that he will be arraigned in courts of laws to answer charges after investigations are complete.
