President Yoweri Museveni has stayed a debate on the Apaa land dispute pending his visit to the area next week.
Parliament had on Wednesday started a debate on the unending conflicts between the Acholi and the Madi communities following a statement by the Defense Minister, Adolf Mwesige on the Apaa evictions in Amuru and Adjumani districts.
During the debate, legislators from the Acholi sub-region blasted government for enforcing an eviction of 18,000 people from the disputed piece of land.
But, Mwesige said that he was not aware of evictions in the area promising to make consultations and update parliament. This prompted Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah to postpone the debate pending consultations. Now in his communication to Parliament yesterday afternoon, Oulanyah said that he had held a discussion with President Museveni who asked for a halt on the parliament debate pending his visit to the area after Easter celebrations.
