Bunagana border reopens after 2 years of closure.

The Kisoro District LCV Chairperson, Abel Bizimana, has described today’s reopening of the Bunagana border point as a new lifeline for cross-border trade in the district.

Bunagana entry point to neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo was closed in 2022, after M23 rebels seized Congolese border town of Bunagana.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces Acting Defence Public Information Officer, Chris Magezi, yesterday said President Yoweri Museveni had ordered the immediate reopening of all border posts, that are situated next to M23 positions, including Bunagana, Ishasha and others.

In a telephone interview with our reporter this evening, Bizimana, stated that the Bunagana border closure had severely impacted businesses reliant on cross-border trade. He expressed optimism that its reopening will restore economic stability and livelihoods.
