Rukiga district EC warns candidates against defamation and fundraising during campaigns

The Rukiga District Electoral Commission (EC) Returning Officer, Rebecca Mbabazi, has warned parliamentary candidates against defamatory statements targeting opponents and participation in fundraising activities, noting that both are strictly punishable under electoral law.

Speaking today during a harmonization campaign program meeting for seven parliamentary candidates held Rukiga District EC offices, Mbabazi emphasized that the harmonization meetings are vital for maintaining public order, preventing campaign clashes, and ensuring coordination between the candidates’ teams and security agencies in the upcoming 2026 general elections.

Those who attended were immediately given priority status to select their preferred campaign venues and dates. However, some invited candidates skipped the exercise. Campaigns are set to officially start on November 10th and conclude on January 13th 2026.
