The Minister for Local Government, Balaam Barugahara, has closed the Kabale District Local Government registry and deployed security personnel to the headquarters, following intelligence that officials under investigation for alleged funds misuse planned to burn down the facility to destroy evidence.

Barugahara revealed yesterday that officials had allegedly met to plot burning down the district registry and the District Education Officer’s office to destroy evidence and frustrate ongoing investigations into financial irregularities and corruption. He further alleged that the group planned to target LC5 Chairperson Denis Ndyomugyenyi Nzeirwe within the week by poisoning his cows at his Kamuganguzi farm and poisoning individuals, suspected of leaking information about the corruption probes.

The Kabale Chief Administrative Officer, Robert Mugabe confirmed the closure, stating that staff was instructed to vacate, and both the registry and education department have been placed under tight security pending the outcome of the probe.

In his remarks, Nzeirwe noted that the plot could further implicate the officials already under investigation, adding that the district remains fully prepared to resist any attempts to disrupt its operations. A total of 41 senior officials and staff in the district were last week ordered by Barugahara to vacate office, to pave the way for investigations into alleged corruption.
