100 Congolese Refugees Embark on Long Journeys for New Homes

About 100 Congolese refugees from Nyakabande Transit Centre in Kisoro District, have resorted to walking hundreds of kilometers to Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement in Kamwenge District and Kyaka II Refugee Settlement in Kyegegwa District, in search of permanent settlement. Kyegegwa is located about over 330 kilometers away from Kisoro while Kamwenge is about over 270 kilometers away from Kisoro.
Speaking to our reporter in Kabale Town, Kabale Municipality today morning, the refugees who include John Mugabo Nzayikorera, Christopher Barack and Mupendo Jjadamuru among others, said they decided to trek after refugee authorities at Nyakabande Transit Centre, failed to provide them with transport. The refugees said they left Goma, Rushuru and Masisi in the Democratic Republic of Congo two months ago, after fighting between rebel groups and the government broke out in the areas.
The Settlement Commandant of Nyakabande Refugee Transit Centre in the Office of the Prime Minister, Daniel Kisamo, told our reporter that the centre, provides transport to first-time entrants into Uganda.
Kisamo, said the refugees trekking to settlement camps are the ones who went back to the DRC, having previously been registered and transported to refugee camps in Uganda.
