Kenya bids to host 2029 World Athletics Championships

Kenya has officially submitted a bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, seeking to become the first African country to stage the global athletics showpiece.

Nairobi is competing against London, Rome and Munich, with World Athletics expected to announce the successful bidder next month. Kenyan sports governing body “Athletics Kenya” said the bid has full government backing, including support for security, infrastructure and event organization.

The championships would reportedly be held at the 48,000-capacity Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi. Kenya has a strong athletics record, with 72 World Championship and 38 Olympic gold medals. Kenya has previously hosted international athletics events, including the 2017 World Under-18 and 2021 World Under-20 Championships. Kenya is also set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Uganda and Tanzania.
