Eco-Marathon Launched to Save Lake Bunyonyi

Conservationists with the Center for Peace and Conflict Mitigation (CEPCOM) Uganda have launched the second annual Bunyonyi Eco-Marathon, with the aim to raise awareness and funds for the preservation of Lake Bunyonyi, which is facing environmental threats.

The decision to initiate this marathon was prompted by a disturbing change in the lake’s color, a clear indicator of environmental distress that has alarmed both experts and local communities. Speaking during the launch of the marathon today at White Horse Inn in Kabale Municipality, the Executive Director of Center for Peace and Conflict Mitigation Uganda, Steven Kutesa, stated that Lake Bunyonyi’s discoloration is a direct result of improper human waste disposal.

Kutesa emphasized that solving this issue requires both improved waste management and fostering a sense of community responsibility. He emphasized the urgent need for action to reverse the ongoing environmental degradation.

This year’s marathon, set for November 2, 2025, will focus on the theme: “Managing domestic solid waste disposal for a cleaner and more prestigious Kigezi Eco-region.”
