Kabale-Bunyonyi Road Delays Spark Outcry

Residents and business owners in Kabale District are protesting the slow progress of road works on the Kabale-Lake Bunyony road.

The government launched the tarmacking of this road last month, alongside the Kisoro-Mgahinga road. The three-year, 112 billion shilling contract was awarded to Samcrete Egypt Engineers and Contractors.

However, residents who include Innocent Mugabirwe, a hotel owner in himbi Cell, Joseph Kyomuhendo and the LCI Chairperson of himbi Cell, Ivan Byereta, said that the contractor destroyed their properties, including houses, and then abandoned the site. They also accuse the contractor of failing to sprinkle the road with water, which has led to significant business losses due to dust.

Nicholas Byaruhanga Rutare, a taxi driver on the Kabale-Lake Bunyony road, told our reporter that the contractor vanished after clearing the road, leaving most of the equipment, including Sino trucks and tractors, abandoned along the roadside in Rwakaraba, Kabale Municipality. According to Byaruhanga, the impassable road is severely disrupting their businesses.
