CID & Traffic Officers in Kabale Accused of Extorting Bus Operators

Transport operators in Kabale District have accused a group of police officers, including those from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and Traffic at Kabale Central Police Station, of alleged extortion.
During a recent security meeting with local bus operators, Geoffrey Mugisha, Manager of Jaguar Bus Company, claimed that police officers are soliciting bribes from bus operators whose vehicles are found to be in violation of traffic rules. These alleged bribes also extend to foreign passengers, who are reportedly targeted with accusations of illegal entry.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, acknowledged that some police officers collude with bus operators to extort money from foreign travelers. He strongly condemned this practice and emphasized that it must cease immediately.
Charles Okello, the Kabale District Police Commander, confirmed that he has received complaints regarding police officer involvement in extortion. He stated that investigations into these allegations are currently underway.
