A section of Pentecostal church leaders in Kabale District, has raised concern over what they said is the government failure to take action against religious leaders, who they accuse of financially exploiting their congregations.
The leaders were yesterday speaking during a meeting convened by the Directorate for Ethics and Integrity in the Office of the President, held at Elijah Hotel in Kabale Municipality. The engagement aimed to support religious and faith-based organizations in promoting the National Ethics and Values Policy among families, youth, and children in the region.
The Overseer of Lift Up Jesus Church Kabale, Aloysius Kiiza; the Bishop Emeritus of Kabale Pentecostal Assemblies of God, James Tumwijukye; and the Bishop of Christian Fellowship Churches in Kigezi, Dr. Frank Michael Tweheyo, criticized some pastors for exploiting followers’ faith for personal gain, and urged the government to create a policy to protect vulnerable believers.
In response, the Director of Religious Affairs in the Directorate for Ethics and Integrity, Rev. Can. Aaron Mwesigye and the Assistant Commissioner of Religious Affairs, Justus Rubarema, said a comprehensive draft policy guiding operations of religious and faith-based organizations, is scheduled for approval on June 26th 2025.
