PM Nabbanja Sets 7-Day Deadline Over Displaced Rubanda Residents
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has given the Ministry of Lands a one-week ultimatum to directly engage all 161 residents displaced by the iron ore extraction project in Mufumba Cell, Rubanda District.
Her intervention yesterday follows an outcry from local leaders including Mufumba LC1 Chairperson Paul Tibenderana, Butare-Katojo Town Council LC3 Chairperson George Kaana, and Rubanda LC5 Chairperson Ampere Stephen Kasyaba, who reported that locals felt cheated, deprived of their negotiation rights, and given meager compensation that cannot secure alternative housing.

However, Chief Government Valuer, Gilbert Kermundu, and Ministry of Lands Under-Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Freddie Mugunga maintained that the land was valued at Shs 40 million per acre, with payouts distributed strictly according to sizes. They noted that 99 percent of affected residents were compensated by last week, with the remaining payments delayed by bank issues or late submissions being processed starting tomorrow.
