Juvenile criminals on the rise at Kabale Remand Home

Leaders in Kabale District have expressed concern over the high number of suspected juvenile criminals on remand at Kabale Remand Home.

The Kabale High Court Assistant Registrar, Henry Twinomuhwezi, says that 604 juveniles were brought to the remand home since September 2018. Twinomuhwezi says that in June 2024, six male juveniles were committed to High Court for trial on murder charges, adding that they are surprised when minors who get released are later arrested for committing similar crimes.

The Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, says that the remand home also registered 61 cases of Juveniles from Rwanda and DRC who crossed to Uganda. He says that one of the Rwandan juvenile was arrested after he poured soap in food at the Kabale based Grace Village Orphanage.

The Kabale District Senior Probation Officer, Monica Muhumuza Nzeirwe, says such cases put the future of responsible citizens and family members at stake. The Kabale Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Nyakahuma, advised parents to produce children they can manage in order to reduce such cases.
