Race Against Time: Government Restores Degraded Kiruruma Wetland.
The Ministry of Water and Environment together with and Rubanda District Local government has embarked on a mission to restore the Kiruruma wetland in Shebeya parish of Hamurwa Sub County in Rubanda District as part of President Museveni’s directive on wetland restoration and management.
During the launch held at Hamurwa Primary School playground, the officials handed over hoes, spades, shovels and seedlings to people around Kiruruma wetland in the villages of Muzirante, Ikumba and Karungu. The Rubanda District Natural Resources Officer; Jane Amumpaire said the equipment is aimed at kick starting restoration activities such as digging check dams and planting indigenous tree species around the wetland.
The Rubanda Resident District Commissioner; Eric Ssewandigi condemned political leaders who politicize the presidential directive and potentially hindering the progress of the project.
Some of the locals including the Ikumba village LC1 Chairperson Mildred Twikiriize and Godwin Kakuru said that while the government has provided alternative livelihoods, such as livestock, they expressed concerns about the potential loss of income from wetland activities.
