Kabale district authorities launch catchment restoration areas

In a bid to address climate-related disasters such as soil erosion and excessive flooding in Nyombe wetland of Kahungye Sub County, Kabale district authorities together with the ministry of water and environment yesterday launched the restoration of catchment areas in Kinisa, Nyombe and Bugoto villages.
The launch which was held in Nyombe parish of Kahungye Sub County yesterday focuses on implementing measures to protect, conserve and restore Nombe wetland ecosystem. Officials handed over equipment such as hoes, spades, shovels and seedlings to people around the wetland to kick start restoration activities such as digging check dams and planting indigenous tree species! The Kabale district natural resources officer; Henry Tumwesigye said residents were sensitized about the importance of wetlands and voluntarily agreed to vacate them.
The Kabale Resident District Commissioner; Godfrey Nyakahuma said catchment restoration is meant to mitigate climate disasters: such as floods and erosion that have recently affected Kigezi region.
However, residents who include Fausta Kyampeire and Thanks Twesigye expressed dissatisfaction about the alternative livelihoods government has promised them since they do not match the income they have been getting from wetland activities.
