Kabale Meteorologist Sounds Alarm on Lightning Dangers
As the rainy season intensifies, the Kabale district Meteorology Officer; Benard Kanyesigye has rallied people in Kigezi sub region to remain vigilant against the dangers posed by lightning strikes.
Speaking to our reporter today, Kanyesigye emphasized that the current weather pattern, is mostly characterized by thunderstorms which often lead to increased lightning activity, noting that it is essential for everyone to take precaution, to ensure their safety.
He advised people to seek shelter indoors when it is raining, stay away from tall structures, trees and metal objects, avoid open fields and high ground where the risk of being struck is heightened.
Kanyesigye also urged locals to refrain from using electrical appliances during the rain because power surges occur when lightning strikes, potentially causing fires or damage to electronics.
Kanyesigye’s advice follows recent incidents where lightning killed two people and injured three others in Rubanda district in a space of one week early this month. Six people were also struck dead by lightening between 2021 and 2023 in the District.
