Abandoned Road Repairs Hamper Traffic on Kabale-Mbarara Highway

Road users of Kabale-Mbarara Highway have expressed concern over the decision by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) officials, to abandon the rehabilitation works on different sections of the road, which they say is hindering traffic flow along the highway.

About four months ago, UNRA started removing the first layer of the tarmac along the high way and this affected traffic flow, mostly at Kabaraga and Kaharo, Kyobugombe and Bukinda trading centers.

Owen Tumuhimbise, a taxi driver says by the time UNRA abandoned the works, they left some parts of the road as one way and there are no UNRA officials to control traffic, which can lead to accidents.

Journey Bagamba, a motorcyclist says that two motorcycle singles accidents were registered last week after the riders hit the stones that were left along the highway since they were not visible.

Emmanuel Mutambuuka Turyasingura, also from Rukiga District says the abandonment of the rehabilitation works did not only affect road users, but has also crippled businesses along the highway.

The UNRA Spokesperson, Allan Ssempebwa, promised to comment after consulting Kabale UNRA officials. When contacted, the UNRA Manager for Kabale Station, Alison Abenabo Twine, referred our reporter to the Project Engineer Simon Peter Odoch, whose phones were switched off by the time of filing in this story.
