Patient Lynched in Kisoro After Hospital Escape
Police in Kisoro District are investigating the tragic death of 37-year-old Desire Irankunda, who was lynched by mob, after escaping from Kisoro General Hospital, where he had been admitted for health complications while in police custody.
The incident happened at around 10:00pm at Bupfumfu Village in Nyakinama Sub County. Irankunda, was initially arrested on May 13th 2025, on charges of aggravated robbery along with five other individuals, and they were transferred to Mbarara on May 20th at the request of flying squad for further interrogation.
The suspects were returned to Kisoro on May 29th. However, during the transfer, Irankunda’s health deteriorated, leading to his urgent admission to Kisoro Hospital on Monday. Irankunda, however, later escaped from the police in the hospital.
The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, said that Police launched intensive efforts to recapture him, but he remained at large until local residents in Bupfumfu Village spotted and assaulted him to death.
