Three months dry: Severe water shortage paralyzes Bigungiro parish.

Residents of Bigungiro Parish in Nyamweru Sub-county, Rubanda District, are grappling with a biting water crisis that has lasted for nearly three months, disrupting household activities.

Residents, including Asiimwe Kamaga, Prossy Turyamureba, Bahati Enos and Junior Tukamusiima, together with Rwakaruma Village LC1 Chairperson Mukorereki Bright, said the shortage has forced them to walk long distances in search of water, with a single jerrycan reportedly costing between 1,000 and 3,000 shillings.

They said the prolonged shortage has left many households struggling to meet their daily water needs raising concerns about hygiene and sanitation. They added that their repeated appeals to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation have yielded little action.

Speaking to our reporter today, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation Manager in Kabale, Patrick Otim, said the crisis was caused by a mechanical breakdown of the main pump supplying Bigungiro. Otim said a temporary pump was installed yesterday as a short-term measure, while a permanent replacement awaits Uganda Revenue Authority clearance and will be installed to restore a permanent water supply.
