Mudslides and Poor Equipment Hamper Kabale Road Network

Authorities in Kabale District have blamed the poor road network to lack of proper road equipment and the district’s hilly terrain that is prone to mudslides during the rainy season.

The Kabale District Engineer, Januario Turinawe Bagamuhunda told our reporter yesterday that they are unable to carry out periodic road maintenance and planned opening of roads due to lack of road equipment such as bulldozes and excavators. Turinawe said that the road equipments that were allocated to the district cannot manage the rocky terrain, adding that securing equipment from Mbarara station takes three to six months, which causes delays to rehabilitate the roads.

The Kabale District Roads Committee Chairperson, Catherine Atwakire Ndamira said that she will report to parliament to ensure that Kabale district is allocated more funds to work on the roads.

The Minister of State for Industry, and the Ndorwa West MP, David Bahati, revealed that the issue of lack of equipment for Kigezi, Rwenzori and Karamoja regions has already been discussed by Cabinet, adding that President Yoweri Museveni said such regions will be given additional road equipment due to terrain of the areas.
