The Minister of State for Tourism, Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, has pledged the government’s commitment to establishing museums in all regions of Uganda by 2030.

Speaking yesterday at Kabale Municipal Stadium in Kabale Municipality during International Museum’s Day celebrations, Minister Bahinduka, said the initiative would enhance access for tourists and Ugandan learners, hence supporting recreational, academic, and research purposes.

He revealed that 131,000 visitors visited Uganda’s museums across the country in 2023. Bahinduka emphasized that museums greatly impact the tourism sector, whose total contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product is 12.1 trillion Shillings.

The President of the International Council of Museums-Uganda, Samuel Kizaalwa and the Chairperson of Uganda Community Museums Association, Abraham Kitaulwa, called for operationalization of the Museums and Monuments Act 2023, to consolidate heritage conservation efforts.

On his part, the Chairperson of Kigezi Tourism Cluster, Canon Eng Ivan Mbabazi Batuma, emphasized the urgent need for the government to honor its pledge to tarmac tourism roads, particularly the nearly impassable ones in south-western Uganda.
