Kabale farmers demand alternative livelihoods before eviction
Several farmers, who have been ordered out of Nyombe Wetland in Kahungye Sub-County in Kabale District, have accused the government of delaying to provide alternative livelihoods, after demarcation of the wetland started last week.
The farmers – who include, Silas Katureebe, Dan Tusasiirwe, and Prosy Owoyesigire, said they are yet to receive livestock, which the government promised them through the Ministry of Water and Environment.
They added that following the eviction from the wetland, which they have been using for decades, they are now stuck without alternative livelihood.
The Kabale District Natural Resources Officer, Henry Tumwesigye, told our reporter that they were still compiling a list of the affected farmers, adding that livestock – including heifers, goats, and sheep, among others, would be delivered to the affected persons in December this year.
The Ministry of Water and Environment, together with Kabale District Local Government, last week started demarcation of the 300-hectare Nyombe Wetland and the Lake Bunyonyi buffer zone. Farmers were given up to October 15th 2025, to have harvested their crops from the wetlands.
