Uganda to export power to Rwanda and DRC

The Minister of State for Energy, Sidronius Okaasai Opolot, has revealed that the government plans to export power tapped from the newly constructed Karukara Sub-station in Rubanda District, to Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Speaking this week during his visit to the Sub-station, Minister Okaasai, said Uganda, intends to dominate the East African region as the largest power exporter. He added that the remaining power will be distributed to the planned steel factory in Rubanda, and proposed industrial parks in Kabale, Kisoro and Bushenyi districts.

Minister Okasaai, earlier noted the completion of the Karukara Substation and the Mirama-Kabale transmission line, will not completely solve the problem of constant power outages in Greater Kabale and Kisoro.

The project – worth 83 million US Dollars, (about 306 billion Shillings), is expected to be commissioned on December 14th 2024.
